When Rain is Red

This is the title of the book I just completed. I am thrilled with how it came out, and am eager to submit it. Now it is in its first reading-- Katie is on the couch flipping the pages. Tonight Rob will read it. I will make any corrections over the weekend, and mail it to Delacorte before the 12/31 contest deadline. Then I wait until spring. Two entries in one contest make for some nervy trips to the mailbox!

Next project? Hm. I have several in cue. Maybe I need to take a few days to read. I have Debbie Levy's book to finish before her Book Club Sunday. I also want to read Crazy Lady, having met THE Jane Conly at the retreat last weekend. And I have two Wendy Mass novels from the library. Yes, I think reading is in order. Clear my head of Lewis and fill it with some marvelous prose!

Retreat and Go Forward

This past weekend I attended a writer's retreat with a handful of members of the regional chapter of the SCBWI. It was a lovely weekend, and I accomplished more than I imagined I would.

I completed the second YA novel I have been working on. This one is called, "When Rain is Red." The book is about a school shooting, but more deeply about how Lewis, the eleven-year-old main character, is drawn into a darkness that leads to this tragedy. Writing the shooting scene was very difficult. I procrastinated a long time. But I think I was able to capture the terror, the horror, without being gratuitous or graphic. We shall see!

Update and New Projects

Yesterday marked the three month point since I sent off my proposal for the St. Rocco manuscript. Having heard no word, I can think one of two things-- they are still considering it, passing it around, debating its merits, or they are so swamped that they just haven't gotten around to sending it back to me with their condolences. I won't even think about the options like, they never received it in the first place, or they hated it so much they tossed it into the fireplace, or-- the writer's nightmare-- they have recently changed their policy and will only respond to manuscripts they have accepted.

This is the most frustrating new policy publishers have adopted. I GET that they are busy, I GET that they want to save paper. But do they GET that receiving even a post card of regret in the mail is the closure a writer needs?

At any rate, I think this particular publisher still responds to rejections. And delayed news has the potential to be good news. There-- I have printed it, and tomorrow I will certainly receive that letter of closure!

Meanwhile, I have completed one and nearly two manuscripts of YA fiction. Katie read the first, with the working title "Seven Summits", and declared, "Mom! Wow!" which I take as high praise!

Although I am proud of the characters I have created in these two books, I am nervous to pass them around for critique. They have language. They are, after all, YA books, and are expected to resonate with the average teen.

I do not feel the need to include sex in my YA's. Language, however, is a tool that helps develop a character. There are some characters one would expect to use certain turns of phrase. To avoid such words would be false to the character, maybe even to the point of distraction. What bully, for example, would be telling his victim, "Stay away from my girlfriend, darn you!" By the same token, vulgarity is a tool that can just as easily be over-used to the point of distraction. Pepper lightly dusted adds zing. Pepper piled high ruins the flavor completely.

A book proposal

Well, this is the kind of day a writer dreads and longs for at once. I spent the morning doing the business end of writing, preparing a proposal letter, a book synopsis, the precise format required by the publisher, sweating over the perfect smoothness of the SASE, the lack of smears on the cover letter, and, should I use the Purple Heart stamp or the American flag stamp??

But the proposal is in the envelope sealed from my sight and what is done is done. The problem with this manuscript, the hagiography of St. Rock I have been working on for nearly seven years, is that there are so few places to which I can pitch it. There are only two, maybe three publishers that consider saint bios for kids. So I must keep in mind that this book is very special in that the completion of the manuscript is the completion of the task. What happens to it after that is in God's hands and should not concern me.

This Monday, August 16, the Feast of St. Rock, I will bake bread and imagine that Sister Christina is opening my envelope and liking what she sees!

Newbery List by Author

Although I have been sorely disappointed (and at times flummoxed)by the choices made by the Newbery committees of the past few years, it is still one of my hobbies to collect the medal and honor winners. During spring (book sale season!) I revise and update my list and go out in search of the best, old, cheap copies I can find. But finding a comprehensive list of all medal and honor winners, alphabetical by author, is nearly impossible. So I have made my own and I share it with you. Anyone finding any mistakes or omissions is urged to let me know.
